Krafton Renames BGMI Lite to BGMI Air Ahead of India Launch as Pre-Registrations Cross 10 Million

Krafton India has changed the name of its upcoming lightweight battle royale game. What was announced as BGMI Lite is now BGMI Air. The company made the announcement on October 15, 2026, and said the game has already passed 10 million pre-registrations.

If you're in the US and BGMI is new to you, don't worry. This post covers what the name change means, what is confirmed so far, and what Krafton still hasn't said about BGMI Air.

Quick Answer: BGMI Air is the new name for BGMI Lite, a lighter version of Battlegrounds Mobile India. Krafton says it has passed 10 million pre-registrations, with an initial download of around 1GB and an India launch planned for later in 2026. No exact release date or open beta date has been announced.

What Happened: BGMI Lite Is Now BGMI Air

In a press note from Bangalore dated October 15, 2026, Krafton India said its upcoming lighter mobile game, earlier announced as BGMI Lite, will now be called BGMI Air. The announcement came with a milestone: pre-registrations have crossed 10 million ahead of the India launch.

Krafton frames the rebrand as the next chapter in its effort to bring the core BGMI experience to a wider audience through a streamlined, lighter game. Coverage of the announcement says the earlier plans are unchanged. Only the name is new.

The company's social post uses a short tagline: "Lighter name, same heavy action." The artwork shows the old BGMI Lite icon turning into the BGMI Air icon.

Quick Background for US Readers: What Is BGMI?

BGMI stands for Battlegrounds Mobile India. It is Krafton's India-focused battle royale game, built from the PUBG Mobile experience. PUBG Mobile was banned in India in 2020 over national security concerns. Battlegrounds Mobile India came out for Android users on July 2, 2021, after a pre-registration campaign that Krafton said passed 40 million sign-ups before launch.

BGMI has been positioned as a game for Indian players, so this news is mainly about the Indian market. It also fits a wider trend of publishers shipping lighter mobile versions for players with budget phones and limited storage.

Krafton has done a similar rename before. According to TalkEsport, PUBG Mobile Light became PUBG Mobile Flash globally in September. Some fans guessed BGMI Lite would become "BGMI Flash," but Krafton India chose "Air" instead.

BGMI Air Timeline So Far

Date	What happened
August 16, 2026	Krafton India first announced BGMI Lite, promising a launch by the end of the year
August 25, 2026	Android pre-registration opened on Google Play in India
October 15, 2026	BGMI Lite renamed BGMI Air; 10 million pre-registrations announced
Later in 2026	Planned India launch, with no exact date confirmed

BGMI Air Download Size and Pre-Registration

The detail players will care about most is size. Krafton says the initial download is around 1GB. For comparison, one outlet reports that the standard BGMI file can reach up to 8GB. That gap is the whole point of this version: a smaller install for phones with limited space.

Pre-registration is currently for Android users in India through Google Play. If you want to sign up, use the official Google Play listing only. Be careful with any site offering a "BGMI Air APK." The game has not been released, and downloads from outside Google Play do not come from Krafton.

Krafton hasn't said whether people who pre-registered under the old BGMI Lite name need to do anything again. The coverage I reviewed doesn't mention any change to pre-registration.

BGMI Air vs BGMI: Accounts and Cross-Play

This is where the reporting needs a careful read. The October 15 press note says existing BGMI players do not need to transfer their account to play BGMI Air. They can access it separately. Krafton is also describing BGMI Air as a new game rather than an update to the current one.

Earlier, in August, coverage of BGMI Lite said players could use existing BGMI accounts and that cross-play between the two versions was planned. Those statements may not conflict, but Krafton hasn't explained how account access and cross-play fit together under the new name. Treat the details as unsettled and check Krafton India's official channels for updates.

BGMI Air Release Date and Open Beta

Krafton says an open beta will come before the general release. The beta is meant to test technical stability and gather feedback, including on network performance across different phones.

No beta date and no final release date have been announced. All Krafton has said is that the launch will happen in India later in 2026. Updates are expected through its official channels, including a dedicated Instagram page.

Why the Rename Matters

This section is my analysis, not confirmed fact.

"Lite" often signals a stripped-down game, and some players read it as second-rate. "Air" suggests something light and smooth without the "cut-down" feel. The rename also lets Krafton present the game as its own product, which matches how it is describing the project now.

The bigger question is quality. A 1GB game that still feels like BGMI is a hard balance. PCQuest raised the same point: how much of the full experience can survive in such a small package? The open beta should answer that. Until then, the 10 million pre-registration figure shows interest, but it doesn't show how the game will play.

What Is Still Unconfirmed

The exact launch date
The open beta date
Final device requirements
Whether pre-registration rewards will be offered
How account access and cross-play will work
Whether an iOS version is planned. Pre-registration is Android-only so far, and I haven't seen an iOS announcement

Conclusion

BGMI Air is BGMI Lite under a new name. The 10 million pre-registrations show strong interest in a lighter BGMI, and the roughly 1GB starting size is the headline feature. What's still missing is the practical detail: a launch date, a beta date, and clear answers on accounts and cross-play.

Until Krafton fills those gaps, stick to official sources and Google Play for anything related to BGMI Air. I'll update this post when the open beta or release date is announced.
